The Cheap Wigs story begins when Mr. Bob, a 57-year-old art teacher and punk rocker at High Tech High in Chula Vista, brought his guitar to school one day in the early spring of 2025. While playing, he was spotted by a student returning from lunch period. Octavio, a junior and self-admitted music nerd, was intrigued by Mr. Bob’s off-tempo, angular, and messy guitar playing, enough so that he approached him and asked if they could “jam” the following day during lunch. Mr. Bob was equally impressed by Octavio’s willingness to indulge and follow along in these unpredictable and unstructured jam sessions. They took a mutual liking to each other.

When Mr. Bob suggested that the pair start a band, finding suitable people to play with initially proved challenging… that is, until Mr. Bob spotted his sophomore advisee, Lili, hauling her guitar and practice amp back into the classroom after a lunch jam session on the school’s lawn. He approached her and asked if she wanted to play bass in a band. Caught off guard and not knowing what she was getting herself into, she readily agreed. When asked if she knew someone who wanted to sing, Lili immediately volunteered her friend, Suriya, who is also one of Mr. Bob’s advisory students.
Fast forward to May of 2026. Cheap Wings just finished recording and mixing their first full-length studio album with Demetrus Antuna at K Street Kreative Studio in San Diego, and it will be released on Donut Crew Records. A limited-edition physical release will include artwork and a CD. The band will be supporting their new album in the Fall of 2026. ​
